Mercado de la Cebada

The Mercado de la Cebada is an adaptive reuse project to transform a run-down market in the center of Madrid into a mixed-use cultural center. The project takes the existing thin-shelled dome structures and rethinks them to incorporate a theater, a library, exhibition space, retail and complex for artistic residencies. This is articulated through a strategy of partial demolition and the insertion of lightweight structural and partitioning systems. Through a single system, the project reorganized interior spaces, accommodates new programs, and establishes more nuanced and urban relationship between the building and its immediate context.
